Project Overview – Tegula Paved Driveway Extension in Leyland
Our team recently completed a seamless Tegula-style block paving extension to a driveway in Leyland, creating additional off-road parking space while perfectly matching the existing driveway. The client required a wider parking area to accommodate more vehicles and improve accessibility. The challenge was to extend the driveway using new blocks that would blend naturally with the original surface in both style and tone.
Before and After Comparison
Before:
- The original driveway was too narrow for modern parking needs, with a section of unused lawn reducing accessibility. The space lacked both functionality and aesthetic appeal.
After:
- We extended the driveway using matching Tegula paving, blending seamlessly with the existing layout. The new section not only provides extra parking space but also enhances the property’s kerb appeal with it’s neat finish and professional installation.
Materials Used
- Tegula Block Paving
- MOT Type 1 Hardcore
Construction Stages
- Excavation:
- The project began with the removal of the existing lawn and topsoil next to the original driveway. Using a compact mini digger, we carefully excavated to the appropriate depth to accommodate the sub-base and block layers. Great care was taken around garden borders and existing brickwork to preserve the integrity of the surrounding landscape.
- Base Preparation:
- Once excavated, we installed a high-quality geotextile membrane across the entire area. This prevents weed growth while allowing for natural drainage. On top of the membrane, we added and compacted a MOT Type 1 hardcore in layers using a vibrating plate compactor to create a solid and well-draining foundation. The base was shaped with a gentle gradient to ensure surface water runs off efficiently.
- Sand Bedding Layer:
- After compacting the hardcore, we applied a layer of sharp screeding sand. The sand was carefully levelled using screed rails to achieve a smooth, even bedding layer. This stage is crucial to maintaining a level block surface and ensuring the blocks are bedded consistently.
- Block Laying:
- We sourced premium Tegula-style concrete blocks in a colour blend that closely matched the existing driveway. Laying began from a fixed point and followed the original laying pattern for a seamless integration. Each block was laid with precision, and all edges were hand-cut as needed to fit tight curves and boundaries. Edge restraints were also installed where required to ensure long-term structural integrity.
- Jointing & Finishing:
- Once all blocks were laid, kiln-dried jointing sand was swept across the surface to fill the gaps between blocks. This locks them together and provides lateral stability. The entire area was then compacted with a plate compactor using a protective mat to prevent marking. A final brush-in of sand completed the surface.
Conclusion
- A nearly invisible transition between the new extension and the original driveway.
- Increased parking space and kerb appeal.
- Durable, low maintenance surface with a rustic, aged aesthetic.
