Block Paving Driveway Installation – Colne

This project was a complete front garden transformation on a modern property in Colne. The original area was an unfinished space of soil and hardcore, offering limited and messy parking. The objective was to create a large, durable and stylish driveway that would maximise parking space and enhance the home’s kerb appeal.

Before

The property’s frontage was an unprepared mix of soil, weeds, and a small area of turf. It lacked a functional driveway, meaning vehicles had to be parked on an unstable and untidy surface. The area looked unfinished and did not match the modern aesthetic of the house.

Site Clearance & Excavation

The project began with a full excavation of the front garden. All existing turf, soil, and vegetation were removed using a mini digger. The area was cleared down to a suitable depth to accommodate the new sub-base and paving layers.

Sub-Base & Foundation

A heavy-duty geotextile membrane was laid down to prevent weed growth. Following this, a substantial layer of MOT Type 1 hardcore was installed and thoroughly compacted with a plate compactor to create a solid and stable foundation for the driveway.

Drainage System

To ensure effective management of surface water and prevent pooling, a high-capacity linear channel drain was installed across the entire front boundary of the new driveway. This is essential for directing rainwater away from the property and into the public drainage system.

Block Paving Installation

The main body of the driveway was laid with high-quality charcoal-coloured block pavers in a 45-degree herringbone pattern for maximum strength and visual appeal. To frame the area, a contrasting double border was created using a buff-coloured block, which neatly complements the home’s stone walls.

Finishing Touches

Once all the blocks were laid and cut, kiln-dried sand was brushed into the joints and the entire area was compacted again. This process locks the pavers firmly in place, creating a durable and integrated surface.

Conclusion

The finished project is a stunning and highly practical driveway that completely transforms the front aspect of the property. The dark charcoal paving provides a clean, modern aesthetic that sharply contrasts with the light-coloured stone of the house and boundary walls. The addition of the buff border creates a professional, framed look that defines the space. The new driveway not only offers ample, stable parking for multiple cars but also significantly enhances the home’s overall kerb appeal.
