Block Paved Driveway in Stockport
This project in Stockport involved transforming an overgrown and unusable front garden into a spacious, elegant block-paved driveway. The key challenge was to create a large, practical parking area while seamlessly incorporating a beautiful, curved brick planter that the homeowners wished to retain as a central feature.
Before
The front of the property was an underdeveloped area of soil and overgrown vegetation, including large, stubborn tree roots. It offered no formal parking and detracted from the home’s otherwise tidy appearance.
Site Clearance & Excavation
The project began with a major excavation. All turf, topsoil, and vegetation were stripped back, and a mini-digger was used to remove the extensive network of large roots to prevent future disruption to the paving.
Sub-Base Preparation
With the site cleared, a deep and robust sub-base of MOT Type 1 hardcore was hardcore was installed across the entire area. This was thoroughly compacted with a heavy-duty plate compactor to create a solid, stable foundation capable of supporting multiple vehicles without settlement.
Edging & Feature Work
The double charcoal border was meticulously laid to frame the driveway. Special attention was given to the intricate, sweeping curve around the existing brick planter, with each block precisely cut and laid to create a flawless, flowing line.
Paving & Finishing
A screeded layer of sharp sand was prepared before the main body of brindle block pavers was laid in a classic 45-degree herringbone pattern. A recessed drain cover was also installed to ensure a seamless finish. Finally kiln-dried sand was brushed into all joints and the entire surface was compacted to lock the pavers tightly in place.
Conclusion
The finished driveway is a testament to skilled craftsmanship, transforming an unusable space into a huge asset for the property. The elegant curve around the planter demonstrates a high level of attention to detail and creates a unique, custom look. The contrast between the brindle paving and the charcoal border provides a classic, sophisticated finish that perfectly complements the house and its surroundings.
