Project Overview – Block Paved Driveway with Wooden Sleepers in Bacup
This stunning transformation in Bacup saw us remove a tired and worn tarmac driveway and replace it with a beautifully crafted block paved surface featuring wooden sleeper edging. The aim was to improve both functionality and kerb appeal for this modern property.
Before and After Comparison
Before:
- The existing driveway was a plain, sloped tarmac surface that had begun to crack and deteriorate over time. It lacked character, edge support, and kerb appeal, blending into the surroundings without much definition.
After:
- Now transformed with stylish block paving in a charcoal and gold colour scheme, the driveway boasts a striking central feature and natural wooden sleeper edging. The result is a clean, modern, and eye-catching entrance that adds real value to the property.
Materials Used
- Block Paving
- MOT Type 1 stone base
- Wooden Sleepers
Construction Stages
- Removal & Excavation:
- We began by breaking up and removing the existing sloped tarmac driveway. All debris was loaded onto grab wagons and taken away from the site. The area was then excavated to a suitable depth to allow for a full sub-base installation while maintaining the correct drainage gradient.
- Ground Preparation & Edging:
- Once excavation was complete, we installing a geotextile membrane to prevent weed growth and improve ground stability. A solid Type 1 MOT stone base was laid and compacted using a heavy-duty plate compactor.
- Sleeper Installation:
- To complement the bold block paving, we installed natural timber sleepers along the side of the driveway. These not only create a rustic contrast against the contemporary paving but also service a practical purpose, retaining the raised lawn and providing a clean boundary edge. The sleepers were securely set into position and treated for longevity.
- Laying the Driveway:
- A sharp sand screed was levelled across the area, preparing the perfect bedding layer for the block paving. We used charcoal grey blocks with golden yellow border detailing, laid in a herringbone pattern for both strength and visual interest. A decorative inset diamond motif was also included at the centre of the drive for an extra touch of style.
- Finishing Touches:
- After all blocks were laid and aligned, kiln-dried sand was brushed into the joints and the entire driveway was compacted to ensure a solid, long-lasting finish. Final checks were made to drainage levels and surrounding landscaping.
Conclusion
- The new block paved driveway completely refreshes the front of the home, adding a modern and high-end look.
- The combination of charcoal and golden tones provides a sleek yet warm colour palette.
- The wooden sleeper edge not only supports the lawn but adds a charming, rustic border that contrasts perfectly with the crisp paving design.
