Autumn Brown Indian Sandstone Patio in Nelson
This project was a complete renovation of a tired, multi-level garden patio in Nelson. The existing space was paved with old, mismatched flags, and the layout was awkward and unsafe. The goal was to create a single, cohesive, and beautiful outdoor living area using premium Autumn Brown Indian Sandstone, transforming the space into a warm and inviting extension of the home.
Before
The garden featured a disjointed, multi-level patio constructed from old, weathered paving slabs. The steps were uneven, and the different areas felt disconnected and unsafe. The overall appearance was dated and did little to complement the property.
Site Clearance & Excavation
The project began with the careful removal and disposal of all the old paving slabs from the various levels of the garden. The existing sub-base was then excavated and re-levelled to create a solid and properly graded foundation for the new patio.
Structural & Step Work
The existing steps and retaining structures were rebuilt and reinforced to ensure they were safe and integrated seamlessly into the new design. New platform areas were created to improve the flow and usability of the space.
Sub-Base Preparation
A new, deep sub-base of MOT Type 1 hardcore was installed across all levels of the patio. This was thoroughly compacted to provide a solid, stable foundation, essential for a long-lasting, high-quality finish.
Indian Sandstone Installation
We laid premium Autumn Brown Indian Sandstone flags in a random, multi-sized pattern across the entire area. The warm blend of brown and buff tones creates a timeless, natural look that enhances the garden’s character. Each slab was laid on a full mortar bed for maximum stability.
Pointing & Finishing
The patio was completed by pointing all the joints with a high-quality, durable jointing compound. This not only secures the flags firmly in place but also provides a clean, professional finish that complements the natural stone.

The finished project is a spectacular success, turning a previously awkward and dated space into a luxurious and unified outdoor living area. The warm, autumnal colours of the sandstone bring the garden to life, creating an inviting atmosphere.
